Kristina and Nick’s story started the way a lot of the best ones do – as friends first. They spent about a year building that foundation before things shifted into something more, and nearly ten (!!!) years later, it’s still obvious that their relationship is rooted in that same ease. They’re best friends first, everything else second.
They got engaged in Joshua Tree during Kristina’s birthday trip, on a hike that seemed simple in the moment… and then stayed engaged for four years before their wedding (because, as they put it, “weddings are expensive”). That extra time didn’t dull anything, though – it just made the anticipation that much sweeter.
When it came time to choose a venue, Horton Grand Hotel felt like the perfect fit. With so many guests flying in, they loved being right in downtown San Diego, but what really sold them was the character. The space feels like it’s been preserved in time – full of charm, texture, and history – which matched their vision of a wedding that felt like a “fun, fancy party” without losing personality. It definitely became one of my favorites as well because that’s also right up my alley!
The morning started with rain (which always adds just a liiiittle bit of chaos), and at one point, a bridesmaid and Nick’s mom were literally running to the car with trash bags over their heads trying to protect their hair and makeup. I loved the quick-thinking resourcefulness, with no umbrellas to be seen, and it ended up being one of my favorite photos I’ve taken! There was some uncertainty around whether the courtyard ceremony and dinner would still happen as planned, but by the time everyone arrived at the venue, the rain completely cleared and stayed away for the rest of the day. One of those little wins that kept the vibes high!!
Design-wise, this wedding was such a dream. The florals were colorful in the best way – playful but still elevated – and the mismatched blue bridesmaids dresses somehow coordinated perfectly without feeling too “done.” It all felt very Kristina: thoughtful, a little bold, and really intentional without looking overworked. These also may have been my favorite floral design/tablescapes ever, and I immediately recommended Blooming Fern to everyone I know!
Kristina and Nick described their relationship as complementary, and it showed in such a subtle, grounded way. They’re both more introverted/not overly outward with affection, but you can feel how much they love each other just in the way they exist side by side, and laugh together at everything like it’s an inside joke. It’s the kind of connection that doesn’t need to be performed to be obvious.
They built their timeline around that too – especially prioritizing their first look and private vows. That ended up being the only real time they had alone all day, and they were really intentional about keeping most of it completely private. I stepped in for just a few photos at the beginning and then left them to it, which made those moments feel even more real and uninterrupted, and I was happy to provide that. Even I believe that not everything is about photos, especially if it will take away from your moment.

The ceremony itself was exactly what they wanted – fun, short, and not overly serious – followed by a reception that fully leaned into the “fancy party” energy. The toasts were one of my favorite parts of the night. Nick’s sister came out with a comically large script to read from (a total surprise), which immediately had everyone laughing, and then somehow the tone shifted into the sweetest, most emotional speeches from Kristina’s sisters. You could feel how close both of their families are, which made it even more meaningful knowing this was the first time their parents were meeting. So many people had traveled in from all over, and there was this underlying sense of gratitude and connection throughout the entire night.
Kristina has always loved the fanfare of weddings (she’s someone who’s dreamed about her day for a long time), but what stood out most wasn’t the scale or the details. It was how them it all felt. Thoughtful without being stiff, elevated without losing warmth, and full of moments that felt natural instead of staged. They wanted their photos to feel timeless, joyful, personal, and chic – something that would still feel true decades from now. AKA, not the big, obvious gestures, but the small things. This gallery ended up having a lot of those “small things” type of photos that make a gallery permanently one of my favorites. I call it “beauty in banality” (read more about that here), and that was very true about this day. There was beauty in every tiny little moment, not just the grand (haha, get it?) ones!
